[HDGEM] The benefits of containers

Containers isolate your service instances from each other.  You can easily monitor the resources consumed by each container. They encapsulate the technology used to implement your services. The container management API also serves as the API for managing your services.
Containers are a lightweight technology.  Container images are typically very fast to build. Containers also start very quickly since there is no lengthy OS boot mechanism. When a container starts, what runs is the service.

[HDGEM] challenges of microservices application deployment

A microservices application consists of tens or even hundreds of services. Services are written in a variety of languages and frameworks.

Each one is a mini-application with its own specific deployment, resource, scaling, and monitoring requirements.

For example, you need to run a certain number of instances of each service based on the demand for that service. Also, each service instance must be provided with the appropriate CPU, memory, and I/O resources.

What is even more challenging is that despite this complexity, deploying services must be fast, reliable and cost-effective.

WildFly Swarm allows the selective reconstitution of those parts, together with your application into a self-contained executable - an "uberjar".

[HDGEM] Atomic Database Operations and race conditions

If you are using an ACID-compliant database, which guarantees atomicity, then the race conditions can be avoided by implementing critical sections as atomic database queries.

Beware, however, of TOCTTOU bugs: any code not inside a database query will still be subject to race conditions.

You really do need to be careful of what guarantees your database provides! If implemented correctly, it is almost certainly better than using a lock.

[HDGEM] What are Race Conditions?

Race conditions in software are when two concurrent threads of execution access a shared resource in a way that unintentionally produces different results depending on the time at which the code is executed.

The Eclipse Edje project defines a standard high-level Java API called Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) for accessing hardware features delivered by microcontrollers (MCU) such as GPIO, DAC, ADC, PWM, etc. that can directly connect to native libraries, drivers, and board support packages provided by silicon vendors with their evaluation kits. How to send a file as an email attachment using Linux command line

Attachments can be added with the "-a" option.
$ echo "This is message body"| mutt -s "This is Subject"-r "Sender<[email protected]"-a /path/to/file [email protected] Mutt is like an enhanced version of the mail command with a very similar syntax.
$ mutt -s "Subject"-a /path/to/file -- [email protected] </tmp/mailcontent.txt On Ubuntu, you may need to put -a after receiver to avoid "unable to attach file" problem.

Example use of the Linux Command zip

zip i88ca *
This command creates a file "i88ca.zip" which contains a copy of all files in the current directory in compressed form. However, files whose name starts with a "." are not included. The extension ".zip" is added by the program. Your to-be zip file name cannot have postfix. For example:

zip i88.ca *
doesn't work.

zip -r i88ca .
This copies the current directory, including all subdirectories into the archive file.

Former United States Commissioner of Patents Charles Holland Duell said in 1902, "In my opinion, all previous advances in the various lines of invention will appear totally insignificant when compared with those which the present century will witness. [HDGEM] Google’s Penguin goes real-time and be more granular

Penguin is a filter designed to capture sites that are spamming Google's search results in ways that Google's regular spamming systems might not detect. Introduced in 2012, it has operated on a periodic basis.

The last Penguin update, Penguin 3.0, happened on October 17, 2014. Any sites hit by it have waited nearly two years for the chance to be free.

According to Google. With this latest release, Penguin becomes real-time. As Google recrawls and reindexes pages — which happens constantly — those pages will be assessed by the Penguin filter. Pages will be caught and/or freed by Penguin as part of this regular process.

As Google said in its post:
With this change, Penguin's data is refreshed in real time, so changes will be visible much faster, typically taking effect shortly after we recrawl and reindex a page.
Penguin becomes more page-specific, not sitewide only Google also said this new Penguin algorithm is "more granular.":

Penguin is now more granular…

[HDGEM] Apple Firmware Password

Even with your files encrypted with FileVault, someone could grab your laptop, enter Recovery Mode and wipe your hard drive clean and start fresh. While this keeps your files from being stolen, it doesn't prevent others from happily using your Mac after a fresh install of OS X. A firmware password is a hardware-based encryption tool that requires a password when booting to Recovery Mode or from an external drive.

To create a firmware password, you will need to reboot your Mac and enter Recovery Mode by holding down Command-R when it begins to boot up. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, click on the Utilities menu in the menu bar and select Firmware Password Utility. Next, click Turn On Firmware Password, enter a password, and click the Set Password button. Finally, click Quit Firmware Password Utility, and choose Restart from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.

FileVault encrypts the data on your Mac so unauthorized users can't access your files. If you are using OS X Yosemite, then you are likely already using FileVault. When you installed Yosemite, one of the setup screens asked if you wanted to enable this utility. To check to see if you are using FileVault, open System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, and then click the FileVault tab. To enable FileVault, click the lock in the lower-left corner to unlock it and enter your admin name and password. Next, click the Turn On FileVault button. You'll get a recovery key, which you'll need if you want to reset your password. Be sure to keep this recovery key in a safe spot. Alternatively, you can store it with Apple. If you choose the latter, you will be asked to create three security Q&As -- three hoops to jump through should you need to ask Apple for your recovery key in the future. After a restart, FileVault will begin to encrypt the files on your drive. You can s…

[HDGEM] SSID (Service Set Identifier—Wi-Fi network name)

The SSID, or network name, identifies your Wi-Fi network to users and other Wi-Fi devices. It is case sensitive. Set to: Any unique name. Details: Choose a name that's unique to your network and isn't shared by other nearby networks or other networks you are likely to encounter. If your router came with a default SSID (network name), it's especially important that you change it to a different, unique name. Some common default SSID names to avoid are "linksys", "netgear", "NETGEAR", "dlink", "wireless", "2wire", and "default". If your SSID isn't unique, Wi-Fi devices will have trouble identifying your network. This could cause them to fail to automatically connect to your network, or to connect to other networks sharing the same SSID. Also, it might prevent Wi-Fi devices from using all routers in your network (if you have more than one Wi-Fi router), or prevent them from using all available bands (…
